Far Eastern Energy Forum Sakhalin Oil and Gas – Russian energy history in the making
Far Eastern Energy Forum was established in 1995 with active support from Sakhalin Regional Government and personally the then Governor – Igor Farkhutdinov to provide a platform for technological co-operation to support new oil and gas projects that were emerging in the region.
Originally, the event was held in London to attract international technology developers, investors and service companies to work in Sakhalin. This proved to be a very successful idea and Sakhalin project operators signed numerous agreements with international partners. As the projects were maturing and starting production, the event was moved to Sakhalin, which has since become the energy capital of the Russian Far East, testing ground for innovations for the offshore oil and gas exploration and production projects and technological and human resources hub for the whole Russian oil and gas industry. Over the years Forum covered the most important milestones of the Sakhalin projects – first offshore platforms were constructed here, first PSA (production sharing agreements) agreements developed and signed, first in Russia LNG plant launched and much more. Sakhalin oil and gas projects have beaten many international records in different aspects of oil and gas exploration and production and some of the most exciting new technologies were developed and tested here.
Since it’s foundation Far Eastern Energy forum became a regular meeting point of all the leading stakeholders of the Sakhalin projects – Russian and international oil and gas companies, suppliers and service companies, scientific organisations and representatives of the Russian and international governments. The Forum has become a real platform to share experience, build new business relationships and learn first-hand information about technological needs of the projects. Renowned Russian and international energy experts, scientists and politicians have presented their views over the years to a 700+ audience of the top-level decision makers from across Russia and beyond.
Forum’s agenda discusses the most cutting-edge issues of interest to the oil and gas industry today. This includes breakthroughs in oil and gas exploration and production technologies, cost saving solutions, digitalisation of the oil and gas operations, environmentally friendly strategies and more. In 2021 Sakhalin has become a testing ground for the first in Russia climate change experiment which entails strict control over CO2 emissions and creation of a platform for trading in carbon units. After testing, this experiment will be extended for the whole of Russia. Sakhalin is aiming to be the first in everything – indeed is it pioneering small and medium LNG projects, promoting the use of the gas as a motor fuel and carefully looking after it’s unique nature despite of the large-scale industrial operations with environmentally friendly technologies and solutions.
